PPP Applications Re-Open & Informative Webinar

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) and U.S. Treasury announced details for the re-opening of the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP). Yesterday, first-time applicants were able to apply for the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP). "Second draw" applications will be able to submit their applications tomorrow, January 13th.

The Tempe Chamber will be hosting a PPP Small Business Webinar this Thursday, January 14th with guest speaker James Pipper, from the U.S. SBA. This webinar will provide an overview of PPP loan processes and resources related to provisions in the Economic Aid to Hard Hit Small Businesses, Nonprofits, and Venues Act (the Economic Aid Act). State of the State Recap

Monday afternoon, Governor Doug Ducey gave a brief State of the State Address from his office at the Capitol. Governor Ducey outlined his vision for 2021, focusing on the continued fight against COVID-19, the distribution of the vaccine, prioritizing K-12 education, creating jobs and helping Arizonans who have been impacted by the economic consequences of the pandemic.

Tempe Chamber Office Hours for Martin Luther King Day 

The Tempe Chamber office will be closed on Monday, January 18th in observance of Martin Luther King Day and will reopen on Tuesday, January 19th. 

Please note: The Tempe Chamber's physical office remains closed and staff is still working remotely to serve our members. Certificate of Origin Appointments can be made by contacting (480) 967-7891. 
 
Military Affairs Committee Scholarship for Tempe Veterans | Apply Today

The Tempe Chamber Military Affairs Committee has officially opened the 2021 Merle Fister Scholarship application to eligible Tempe veterans.

The annual $1,000 Merle Fister Scholarship is awarded to a Tempe veteran who is seeking to complete their academic career, and is given based on character, leadership, academic pursuits, and financial need. The scholarship recipient will take part in the Red, White, and Blue Awards Ceremony held in mid-April to receive their recognition.


 
2021 Speaker Series: Lessons for Life & Leadership Kicks Off Next Week

Sponsored by BD- Becton Dickinson, the 2021 Leadership Speaker Series consists of four dynamic sessions, each led by a leader in their industry who will speak on topics that discuss leadership best practices, stories of how being unique can help you succeed, how to future-proof your career and much more.

Tempe Chamber Board Member Nominated for 2021 Nobel Peace Prize

Tempe Chamber Board Member and Incoming Board Chair Raveen Aurora has been nominated for a 2021 Nobel Peace Prize, to be announced in October 2021.

Downtown Tempe’s Sunday Market is Canceled for the Spring

Due to the current COVID-19 benchmarks from the City of Tempe in response to Governor Doug Ducey’s recent executive order, the spring season of the 6th Street Market is canceled.

The market hopes to return to 6th Street Park in the future and we look forward to hosting our local artists, makers, and food creatives. While we are disappointed by this cancelation and still believe this event to be vital to the community, we believe public health is paramount to anything else and cannot produce events around the City’s current imitations. APS Scored Among Top Utilities Worldwide for Climate, Water Stewardship

Arizona Public Service (APS) is one of very few electric utilities worldwide to achieve a double ‘A’ score for climate and water stewardship this year from the not-for-profit charity CDP, which operates a global disclosure and scoring program designed to encourage investors and businesses to act on environmental issues. 

Only four out of almost 6,000 utilities received a double A score this year. One was Pinnacle West Capital Corporation, of which APS is its principal subsidiary. It also is the only North American utility to receive both ratings this year.

Deadline Extended for Tempe Veterans Commission Survey 

In keeping with Tempe’s designation as a Veteran Friendly City, Tempe is seeking feedback from veterans on several topics. This survey will provide feedback on employment, education, housing, finances and healthcare.

This survey is open to all veterans, or immediate family members of a veteran. Take the survey today. Deadline to complete the survey is January 18, 2021.
 
I-10 Broadway Curve Improvement Project Advancement Updates

The Arizona Department of Transportation has signed an agreement with the developer team that will design and build the Interstate 10 Broadway Curve Improvement Project, the first major urban freeway reconstruction effort in the Valley.

ADOT finalized the $615,600,950 contract with the developer on Tuesday. Construction is scheduled to begin in mid to late 2021 and last up to four years. 

Some planned improvements include:
  • Widening I-10 to six general purpose lanes and two HOV lanes between 24th Street and US 60 Superstition Freeway.
  • Building a collector-distributor road system between Baseline Road and 40th Street to separate local traffic from through traffic on I-10. 
  • Adding a fourth general purpose lane on I-10 from US 60 to Ray Road and keeping the HOV lane.

City of Tempe Sustainability Award Nominations Now Open

The City of Tempe's Sustainability Commission is now accepting award nominations 
for the sustainability achievement of the year award. This award, open to any person, group, youth, or business, is meant to highlight people and projects in Tempe that are setting an example of how we can create a more sustainable and resilient city.  

Awards will be presented at the State of the Neighborhoods Awards & Workshop on Saturday, April 17, 2021.

Safety Supply Kits Still Available for Pick Up

To help businesses who have been affected by COVID-19, the City of Tempe has allocated funds to provide up to 1,000 small businesses with items needed to protect its staff and customers. Businesses can receive:

-50 reusable cloth masks
-5 clear masks
-2 one liter bottles of hand sanitizer

City of Tempe COVID-19 Testing & Vaccine Updates

-Every Tuesday, ASU, the City of Tempe and Tempe Fire Medical Rescue will offer free COVID-19 saliva tests at Cahill Senior Center. Those interested in a test should make a reservation here. 

-As part of a statewide research study, the State of Arizona is providing $3.5 million for antibody testing, which is available at more than two dozen locations across the state. Learn more and reserve your testing appointment today.

-Registration is now open for Phase 1A and Phase 1B prioritized vaccinations. People in Phase 1B must have an appointment to get vaccinated, no walk-ins will be allowed. Appointments will be limited initially for Phase 1B and will be available at designated sites that are not already fully booked for second doses to prioritized individuals from Phase 1A. Learn more today.

U.S. Small Business Administration Extends COVID-19 EIDL Loan Applications

Recently announced, the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) extended the Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) application to December 31, 2021. According to a recent release by the SBA, the deadline extension comes as a result of the recent bipartisan COVID-19 relief bill passed by Congress and enacted by President Trump on Dec. 27, 2020.

 
Arizona Commerce Authority Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP)

Companies hit hard by disruptions, layoffs, furloughs, loss of business and other setbacks due to Covid-19 are encouraged to apply for emergency assistance through the Arizona Commerce Authority’s Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP).
 
Through the partnership, companies can receive subsidized or reduced rates for assistance in areas like rebuilding customer demand, overcoming supply chain disruptions, reassembling their workforce, and identifying new markets. Learn more today. 
National Eviction Moratorium Update

A new COVID-19 stimulus deal reached earlier this month will extend the national eviction moratorium through Jan. 31, 2021. The existing halt on evictions from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was set to expire on December 31, 2020. Renters must meet certain qualifications and also submit a declaration form to their landlords. 

 
New Financial Navigator Available for Tempe Residents

A new no-cost Financial Navigator Program is available to help residents impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic connect with financial resources, understand how to work with creditors and maximize their income.
 
Residents will get one-on-one assistance over the phone and can tailor a plan to their specific needs, everything from applying for rent assistance to managing college loans to finding free tax help. Learn more and apply today.
U.S. Small Business Administration Loan Clinic

During the first Wednesday of each month, learn about SBA’s lending role and how to prepare a request for capital. This free monthly clinic will help attendees understand credit requirements, interest rates, collateral terms, and amounts available. Click here for more information.
