Governor Doug Ducey Announces New Guidance for Arizona

Yesterday afternoon, Governor Doug Ducey announced a new Executive Order, pausing the operations of bars, gyms, movie theaters, waterparks and tubing, that went into effect yesterday at 8:00 pm. Unless extended, the pause will remain in effect until June 27, 2020.

  • Indoor or outdoor public events of 50 or more are prohibited 
  • Schools will delay the first day back with a target date of August 17, 2020
  • New grant for long-term care facilities
  • Vulnerable individuals should continue to remain at home
  • Continue to physically distance

EVCCA Releases Fourth COVID-19 Business Impact Survey

Today, the East Valley Chambers of Commerce Alliance (EVCCA) released the findings from the fourth survey of a series to determine the pandemic's impact. Through this survey, the Tempe Chamber of Commerce, along with other EVCCA members, can better support its member base and community by advocating for the immediate and long-term needs of said demographics. 

Top concerns expressed were acquiring and retaining customers due to lingering COVID-19 fears, followed by the ability to pay expenses, overhead and payroll. Employee stress, obtaining funding to continue operations and supply chain disruptions rounded out the top concerns of respondents.

Community Leaders Recognized at 2020 State of the Chamber & Annual Awards 

Last week, nearly 400 business professionals and community leaders participated in a live broadcast of the 2020 State of the Chamber & Annual Awards, presented by Southwest Airlines. Celebrating 112 years of service to the community, President & CEO Anne Gill reflected on the past year and shared the vision of the year ahead. Office Holiday Hours 

The Tempe Chamber office will be closed on Friday, July 3, 2020, in observance of Independence Day. Staff will resume work on Monday, July 6, 2020.

Maricopa County Small Business Relief Program 

On July 6, 2020, the Maricopa County Small Business Relief Program will begin accepting applications to support the continued viability of small businesses experiencing financial hardship due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. This program will provide up to $10,000 to qualifying organizations for expense reimbursement. 

Please note: Grants will be provided on a first come, first serve basis until funding is exhausted or the grant period closes.

City of Tempe Updates as of June 26, 2020

-Mayor-Elect Corey Woods, first-time City Councilmember Doreen Garlid and re-elected Councilmembers Randy Keating and Joel Navarro will take the oath of office on July 2, 2020 beginning at 6:00 pm. -Funding is still available for nonprofits serving people experiencing homelessness through an emergency solution grant through the City of Tempe. Applications are due July 7, 2020. Click here for more information. 

-The City of Tempe has relocated its cooling center to the Pyle Adult Recreation Center as of June 29, 2020. The move provides a central location for people to cool off, as other city facilities reopen to the north and south. Read the full release here

Arizona State University Invites Employers to Learn About IT Apprenticeship 

Arizona State University (ASU) was recently awarded a $2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor to accelerate the expansion of apprenticeship in IT-related roles across a range of employers. Led by the W. P. Carey School of Business, ASU seeks to establish a public private partnership to create a Digital Workforce Apprenticeship.  

On July 16, 2020, ASU invites employers to a partner briefing where the purpose is to:
  • Learn more about the program
  • Hear from early adopters of the program
  • Ask questions and share feedback
